I would look for a Y adaptor at Best Buy or Radioshack. It will convert your single outlet to a dual outlet. If you can't find that, a inexpensive selector switch should do the job.
The output from the mini jack is bad at the best of times and adding a Y splitter will only reduce this further. Try running the output to a stereo or amp and using the headphone socket there.
Most motherboards have sound headers so you can plug in any jack you want. Creative use to have a 5 1/4 inch drive bay cover with a nice stereo jack on it. I saw something a while back on 5.1 headphones.
If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.
You could also get some new desktop speakers (don't know what you have now)
E.g The new Logitech X-120 for USD29.95
Then you have the headphone jack right in front of you in the speakers , and when headphones are connected the speakers are automaticly muted.
