Audio distorts when overlapped

Hi, I'm fairly new to Premiere (6.5) and I have searched the threads for an answer to this but can't find one.

I have captured analogue video from an old VCR and the audio track is Mono. If I have the audio on (this is just an example) the Audio 1 track then I take a peice of audio from the same Mono recording and place that on Audio 2 track so they are overlapping (i.e. 2 tracks of sound heard at once) the sound is distorted where they overlap (by distorted I mean it crackles and breaks up like a blown speaker). There are no transitions or audio effects used. I have played around with the panning and the volume of the tracks but that makes no difference. I have posted a screen shot as I don't think I am explaining myself very well here.
I have noticed that if the Audio 2 track was, for example, an imported MP3 instead of the Mono recording then the sound does not distort.

Can anyone help with this?
Thanks
D

By the way I'm using Windows XP and sound was recorded through the line in of the PC sound card from a VHS player.

have you tried encoding the mono to mp3? That could be worth a try (also may mean smaller filesize)
