I have some computers that when they try to open an attachment from an email they only get the options to Save to Disk or Cancel. They can not open if from within Outlook.

How or where is the setting to change this. I looked under security but nothing there stands out.??

Directly from this link:

Run Regedit, and go to this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Security (change 10.0 to 9.0 for Outlook 2000 SP3 or to 11.0 for Outlook 2003)

Under that key, add a new string value named Level1Remove.

For the value for Level1Remove, enter a semicolon-delimited list of file extensions. For example, entering this:

.mdb;.url

would unblock Microsoft Access files and Internet shortcuts. Note that the use of a leading dot was not previously required, however, new security patches may require it. If you are using "mdb;url" format and extensions are blocked, add a dot to each extension. Note also that there is not a space between extensions.

If anyone calls and says "I know a little something about computers" just tell them to reformat it.

Isn't that reg entry only there to allow the viewing of the attachment.??
The user can see the files.. but when they double click it they only get the option to save to disk.

What is funny is I have a desktop I just installed from scratch and a reg user can logon and open the files no problem. It seems it is a setting on the server for mailbox or user.??

I did use the Resource Kit to setup the install of Outlook 2003 and I have set the
Allow Access to email Attachments to
PDF;ZIP;SDB;SDW;CAB;QBB;QBA;QBW;QBX;MDB;XLS;DOC

and there is a reg entry for Level1Removal as listed above. I just recently pushed the install for OL2003 and after looking at a few dif clients this morning all of which were installed from the same push, some can open attachments and some are prompted with the Save to Disk option.

After a closer look, (oops) they ones that can still open attachments directly have not been updated with OL2003 yet.

After some more testing it turns out by including the above ext string, that any ext listed will be visible but you will also lose the ability to open that ext directly from within Outlook.

After removing the ext from the reg setting it was visible and anyone could open it directly as well.

So everything is all good now.

If anyone calls and says "I know a little something about computers" just tell them to reformat it.
