We have about a thousand Word documents that were originally stored on a Novell server that were migrated over to an NT server. Everything was fine until the original server was removed. We now have an issue where it takes about 90 seconds for a document to open because the attached template no long exists, once Word times out the document opens. We then have to change the location of the attached template in "Tools-Templates and Add-Ins" for each document then save it to fix the problem.

Does anyone out there know of a utility or method to run a batch fix on all of the documents in a directory or should we just give up and recreate them?

Thanks in advance.

You can run a batch job for all your documents but it will suffer the same performance problems.

If all your documents are in the same directory (or just a few different ones) an alternative solution might be to put a copy of the template(s) in that directory. It will then be used in preference to the one on the no-longer existing network path thus avoiding the delay. A Document_Open procedure in the template could then change the attached template to point to the new server. This could be a semi-permanent solution, or it could be used in conjunction with a batch job if you wanted to do it all at once.

Enjoy,
Tony

Thanks for the reply Tony.

Unfortunately, copying the template into the directory did not have any affect, it shows up in the template applet when I look at it but it still took a long time to open.

Any other thoughts on this one you can think of?

Thanks in advance

If a template with the same name as the attached template exists in the same folder as the document, that template will be opened and used, even if the path to the attached template is available.

If you still have a network delay it must be being caused by something else. Do you perhaps have a Word File location on your old server (Tool > Options > File Locations tab) or some other reference to the server (perhaps inside the template)?

Enjoy,
Tony

If the path of the template is not in UNC notation, you can create an own directory containing the template. In the login script of the users you can assign a path to the directory with the same network letter.
(Hope you understand my bad english).

Carpe diem.
