OK the this makes sense to me but I just want to verify and see if anyone has run into any problems. The Athalon XP 1600+ runs at 1.4Ghz. Now, would a heatsink rated to 1.4 or higher be sufficient for the new XPs?

What would be the best cooling for the XP series in general, around 2Ghz if a speed is needed, but in general more.

In addition, has anyone had any experience with water cooling the XPs? What are some tips there? Best water cooling system? Tom's Hardware tested an Innovatek model anyone else use this brand?

Your correct in your assumptions, the XP1600+ actually runs cooler than an Athlon 1.4 even though it is rated at the same clock speed, so heatsinks rated at 1.4+ will be OK!
But you carn't overcool so go for something decent like the thermalright SK6, Volcano 7 or 6cu, the new twin pipe Coolermaster HHC-001, Globalwin CAK11 38 or the Monster Swiftech MC 462A, these are all top shelf heatsinks, leaders in there class for serious overclockers.
If you just want to keep it cool without the clocking I can personally recommend Taisols cheap copper insert heatsink, the CGK 760092 at around $16 with 23cfm fan it is a good performer with the heatsink potensial for some serious cooling when pared with a Delta 38, kept in standard trim this cooler is more than enough for an unclocked XP1600+
I have got to finnish by pointing out in addition to a good heatsink/fan how important it is to have additional case fans fitted, it is no good buying a trick heatsink if all you are going to do is blow warm air onto it!
You must have good air turnover in the case to lower the internal air temperature, this is a MUST, don't do it later, do it NOW!
Sorry don't have any experience with water cooling, I have heard that it is very good but necessary? well that depends on you, and what you intend to do with this rig.
My opinion is if you want to run a 1400mhz processor at 1700, then why not buy a 1700 in the first place? Martin Vote if you found this post helpful please!!

Thanks your response was very comprehensive. However, do any of these heatsinks have any complications with the Soltek SL-75DRV4 or the SOYO SY-K7VDRAGON+ motherboards. Also, does anyone have either of these two boards. I know they both get great reviews and find myself unable to choose between them.

Hi! I just made the same sort of decission as you are about to make.
They are both great boards with terrific writeups, the Soltek board is a bit of a hidden secret at the moment but not for long! I am sure, with the added UDMA 133 support and added stability compared to the SL-75DRV2 PLUS the secret weapon!!!! PURPLE RAY, PCB the thing looks well cool and goes like stink.
The Soyo Dragon just has everything! what can I say!
But yours is a simple choice, Raid or Non raid?
I was going to get the Soltek but it wasn't available in my area 10 days ago so I brought the Abit KR7 raid! which has just been voted best socket A board but is more money and hasn't got anything onboard (sound/lan/usb2) but honestly it was a question of availability and what people had in stock, and my local vendor did me a great deal on the Abit!
As far as I know ALL! the newest boards (incl the ones mentioned) will accomodate these top line heatsinks.
I have the copper inserted Taisol as mentioned, idling on my XP1700+ at 45C and maxing out around 52C with standard 23cfm fan (this heatsink is capable of much better when fitted with a larger fan! Delta 38 etc) but is fine with a standard or slightly OC't Rig.
Ultimate Air cooled is the Swiftech but is very heavey and has special mounting for the moby.
The thermalright SK6 has very good reviews.
All the best Martin

Does RAID only concern hard drives or does its application include devices? If it includes devices then Soyo "DRAGON" would go along nice with the Antec 1040B Full Tower I am looking at. How about video cards is the price of the GeForce 3 worth it with 4 coming out?

YES! other IDE device, so it does give you more options and allows devices to be installed on there own as master so in the case of writers and CDroms there transfer rates are not compromised by being on one IDE channel.
Also a g/force 3 would be a very good choice but a Radeon 8500 even better and slightly cheaper.
I have always been a great believer in buying one or two models down like the XP1600+ or 1700+ they are a bargain! when compared to the new XP2000+ which is over double the price and only a couple of hundred hertz faster.
Same goes for the Graphics cardsif you can bare the shame of owning last months top model!! lololol Martin Vote if you found this post helpful please!!

hey there, i hope everyone here is happy and healty. Although ive had a fair bit to do with other forums in the past ( R/C related) and although ive got a decent computer at the moment, im competly new to the whole technical side of things, so dont mock me when i ask silly questions k.

first of all, what IS raid?, im about to order the Asus A7v266-E, but no one seems to be able to tell me what raid is. Does it require special components like H/D's or sumthing?.

Also, can anyone give me any comments/ideas on the Asus A7m266-D MoBo.

Im currently studying towards my Diploma ( Batchalor.. same thing i think) in Computer Information Technology, and much of what we do is CPU intensive. Im also right into my computer games, Red Faction, the new Wolfenstein etc, and orderd a Gforce 3(and then cancelld when i realised the 4 was right round the corner)...... whats the A7m266-d like with games.. any ideas?..

Im real sorry about driftin off like this in the topic Hilikus started.

Regards,
Nathan C

Hilikus;

Regarding CPU cooling, check out this site:

For about $650 (US) their cooler will take any CPU down to -19C (-2F). Overkill?

Please let me know if the sugestion(s) I provide are helpful to you.
Sometimes you're the windshield... Sometimes you're the bug.

Raid is all about multiple hard drives and the differant configurations in which they can be put!
If massive amounts of hard drive space is whats needed (and I do mean massive) then raid is they way to go.
There are also other benefits to be had with security of data or speed depending on how the drives are set in raid.
But with the size of single hard drives hitting 100gig do you need raid?
The Dual Asus A7M-266D looks awesome, packed full of features like Pro AGP slot
2 X 64bit PCI, 3 X 32bit PCI
6 channel audio onboard
But bare in mind how much more it will cost! and that the two processors will only come into there own using certain applications.
Note* USB 1.1 has been removed from the board because of running issues, and a PCI USB 2, 4 port card included with the main board to make up for it!
The review I read indicated that the board looked as if it had been rushed into production, a little raw around the edges I think the words were.
But there is no dought that it had great performance and is a sign of things to come.
As for the Asus A7V-266E, very good board, but there are better.
ie: Soyo Dragon plus
Abit KR7 raid 133
All about the same price
Read the recent reviews at Aandtech.

After reviewing the two motherboards, Soyo SY-K7VDRAGON+ and the Soltek SL-75DRV4, for the 10th time, my decision comes down to two things: RAID or UATA 133. Which is more important to me? Hmmm, lets look at each. Right now I have plans to use DVD-ROM, CD-RW, 40Gb HDD, and a 60Gb HDD. Right now this setup doesn't need RAID, if I added an IDE device then it would, but what else do you need really? As far as UATA 133, fast data transfer is always a good thing. The Soltek also has the Red Storm chip. Is this as good as it sounds? I really dont plan on any overclocking so does it matter. Price isn't really an issue eventhough there is a $50 difference between the Soltek and the Soyo. In your opinions whats more important UATA 133 or RAID?

Planned Specs:

Antec SX1040B Full Tower Workstation
Antec 400W Smart P/S
Gainward GeForce 3 Ti 500 64Mb
AMD Athalon XP 2000+
Maxtor 40Gb 5400rpm HDD
Maxtor 60Gb 7200rpm HDD
Plextor 24x10x40x Plexwriter CD-RW
Lite-On 16x48x DVD-ROM
ThermalTake Volcano 7+
Klipsch Promedia 5.1 Personal Audio System
NEC MultiSync FE950+ 19" Flat Screen Monitor
3x 90x90x25mm Case Fans
ThermalTake 90x90x25mm Side Mounted Case Fan
Creative Labs SB Live! 5.1
NetGear 10/100 NIC
v.90 56k Modem
Soltek SL-75DRV4 M/B or
Soyo SY-K7VDRAGON+

You could have both and go for the Abit KR7-raid 133,
Raid and ATA133!!!!!!
Just awarded the best socket A motherboard (about 10 days ago!) Aandtech, Read reviews also tested the Soyo Dragon plus and the Soltek, think it was the DRV2? not 4.

OK! so I just brought one!!!! I think I said all three of these boards are great!!!! so you carn't really go wrong!
With all that gear!!!!1 you will need the extra PCI slot the Abit board has! 6 instead of 5 for the Soyo & Soltek
Also it has 4 and not 3 memory slots!!!!!!
Last thing, you are not using any of the onboard facilities ie: sound or Lan so you might as well have a straight no nonsense, rock solid board that is reviewed as being the fastest there is! The Abit KR7-raid 133

Thanks Everyone, MUCH apreciated.

The USB ports on the A7M266 were replaced by that card, but i also read that it was up to 40 times faster, so who is going to complain?

Where can I find out more information about KT333? The only place I have heard of this is here on the forum. Is it real or just a rumor? I am currently out of the states and am going to be waiting atleast 2 months before I purchase anything, should I wait for this chipset?
