When issuing a show line command, some lines have an * next to CTS DSR DTR RTS on the "modem hardware state" line. What does this * indicate when it is next any of these communications parameters?

Example:
We are using a Cisco 2500 router equiped with eight Async Ports. Ports 1, 3 and 5 are connected to various types of equipment. Communication on port one will hault from until a clear line 1 command is issued to the router. Line one has an * next to CTS and DSR. Lines 3 and 5 do not have * and do not hault communications.

hwystart1,

Did you ever figure out what the * means. I have the same problem.

Found it. It means that the handshaking signal isn't supported in the present configuration. Look at the port....you might setup the port to think it has a modem attached. The modem feature then puts the handshaking signals into full function. The most common problem is RTS/CTS.
