I have an Asus A7V Motherboard with a VIA 133a chipset and thunderbird proccessor. It hangs up all the time. I have replaced parts (including Motherboard), tried different settings and written to Asus 3 times (With no Answer). Any suggestions? It seems to get worse when on for an extended time.

You list a problem that has Hundreds of root problems,
that could be hardware and software.

If you would post complete , and I mean COMPLETE system information, including info on hardware and Software, I would spend some time.

> All you can do now is check CPU temp, and report that back.

> In MSCONFIG,,,,, supply a list of programs that load up at Windows Startup.

Asus Probe reports that the Proccessor is running at 56 deg and the motherboard at 33 Deg C.
I have an Asus A7V133/550/SWA-UAY motherboard with an AMD thunderbird 750 Mhz proccessor and 256 MB of PC133 ram. The motherboard has a built in VIA AC'97 Audio Controller and a WinME Promise Ultra100 IDE Controller. The Hard disk is a Western digital WDC30 0BB-00AUA1, 30 GB. I have a DVD made by I/O Magic, model DVD-16X OEM316B and a Hewlett Packard CD-Rom Writer, model +9700. There is a Road Runner Cable ethernet card, CNET PRO200 PCI Fast Ethernet Adaptor. The mouse is a logitech Rollerball USB and the keyboard is a generic PC2 style. The video card id an ATI Radeon 32MB PCI.
The software is mostly Office 2000, Quicken 2000,Encore Music Notation; Pretty Good Solitaire, Power DVD and Adaptek CD writer apps.
I would be happy to send the MScOnfig file. Where should I send it?
Thanks

First, I would start by trying to cool down the CPU.
133% F, isn't cooking, but it can cause problems.

I don't like to see anything over 125 F. Also, that temp may have been when the system wasn't working hard, so the temp can go up.

> I would order a NEW FAN,,,,,, for the CPU, + at least ONE CASE fan,,,,, a front bottom one.
........ COOLER MASTER,
and also find the CASE Fans,,,,, they are $5 each.
Cooler Master makes nice fans,,,,,,, and offers you a variety. Get some Overkill,,,,, one that is rated higher than the 1 GHz.

MSCONFIG ----- just type out the results here.....

What programs are loading up with Windows startup ?

What OS ?

> Also, what AntiVirus software are you running ?

* Do you have the latest drivers for that Video card ?
Be sure and update your DIRECTX - to 8.0a or 8.1 before updating.

Did you ever install VIA CHIPSET drivers ? (the 4in1, or the AGP)

Enough for now.

How can I tell which fans work with the Asus Probe software for speed indication and protection?
No programs load with windows. Actve sinc, direct CD, office fast start and Macafee load with startup.

One other sympton. Whenever I boot the computer, I get the message "Detected an impropper shutdown." I usually skip the scan disk because it takes forever and never finds anything wrong. Besides, the shutdown is normal!
Thanks, Bill H

Well, from the way this is going, this could take six months.

I would say, buy the fans like I suggested.
> Wipe your hard drive CLEAN and reinstall Win98 SE.

> Load the VIA chipset drivers
> Directx8
> Video card
then the other drivers, but do it in that order.

> * Before you take that method, which isn't dractic by any means,,,,,,, because your having big problems.

1) UNINSTALL McAfee,,,,,, totally.
> reboot
> RUN - REGCLEAN
. you can find REGCLEAN easy. Use Google search to download it and then run it.

MSCONFIG - UNCHECK ......
> Office start fast
> Auto Sync
> Direct CD
The 2 software, D-CD, and office Fast start,,,,, do NOT need to run on startup.

> McAfee ,,,, I have been uninstalling it off of computers for a year now,,,,,, it has caused so many problems. I won't even think about buying it.
If you gave it to me, I wouldn't use it.

Thanks for all your help! I will do it all? How do you feel about Norton antivirus?
Also, while monitoring, I noticed some strange voltages.
12 was 12.828
5 was 4.92
3.3 was 3.632
vcore was 1.76
I think its time for a new power supply.

I use Norton AntiVirus. It's the only one that I will install on Customer computers.
While it isn't trouble free, Norton 2002 works with Windows XP, and also has some great features, including email protection.

I can't tell about the voltages you post, but a Hi-Quality *AMD* APPROVED P/S would be a good investment.
