Ola.
A friend with extremely limited funds just cried on my shoulder that their 5 year old motherboard blew, leaving them without a computer. Rather than send them to Fry's for a $400 kit, I dragged her across the street to Central Computing, where they offered us an ASUS P5kpl-AM plus Intel P. e5700 and 4gb ram for $200. The price is right, I can do the screwdriver and set up, but I notice the board has been around for a bit. (first review 2007). That being said, is there any pressing reason NOT to get this combo for them?
The desktop is not and will never be a media center, he is a carpenter and uses it for his bookkeeping and contracts, while she uses it for event planning. Probably the basic software and W7. In other words, their demands are modest, and this board has as much audio and video on board as they need. Probably more.
(I asked if they used it for media purposes and they said they had a printer and fax attached, so ..no.)

Other suggestions gladly accepted.

Thanks you august lot for your wisdom.

Priced out against Newegg and thier price is spot on. About $10 cheaper at Newegg, but then you have to wait for shipping. Just make sure the case is not a manufacturer custom form factor. Most major brands (IBM, Compaq, etc...) use custom form factor boards so you can't plug and play your own board in their case. At least that's how it used to be. I've been building my own PCs for so long I haven't kept up with the major brands.

I told them to take their case to Central Computing and let them install it. Thanks.

On a lighter note:

"A (female) friend with extremely limited funds just cried on my shoulder..................."

This is how IT people meet the opposite sex. Complication: husband.

Unfortunately, she is not the opposite sex, and if that didn't matter, there is a husband.
With this in mind, my associate (opposite sex, not unattractive and perennially single, just called in to say that outlook on his laptop is not working, and can he bring it to me. Aside from the fact that we know each other way to well, I'd say my mid level abilities in tech, most of them based on something learned in this forum, freaks out the opposite sex rather than attracting them.
so enjoy what you have and where it leads you. My abilities just take me away from my day job.

Well, it was tongue in cheek, but: win some / lose some. My bad though for assuming everyone on here has a Y chromosome.
