Evening all...

I was asked to install XP on an ASUS G1 notebook that was pre-installed with Vista Home Premium. No problem I thought.

Installed XP Home Edition as requested but for some reason the correct chipset drivers, designed for XP, downloaded from the ASUS site showed as installing but didn't install. So ultimately other important drivers won't install. I visited the Intel site and used their 'chipset recognition utility' and that confirmed I was using the right chipset drivers.

Can anyone put me out of my misery and suggest why the correct chipset drivers might not install?

Cheers

I would suggest you install the chipset drivers from Intel's site. Asus seems to always lag way behind when it comes to releasing updated drivers.

Case in point: I bought an Asus A7N8X-X several years ago, when I installed the chipset drivers off the CD; my computer would not shut down - it would restart. I had to sit there and wait for it to restart and then quickly hit the power button. I went to Asus' website and got their latest chispset drivers - same problem. I almost sent the motherboard back, then I downloaded the latest from nVidia - problem solved.

Well after installing XP and having no luck with the chipset drivers from the ASUS site, I did a second clean install of XP and did exactly that... downloaded the drivers from the Intel site and installed them. They were identified by the Intel site as being 'Mobile Intel(R) 945PM'. The whole install process looked very substantial but still no joy. None of the other drivers, reliant on the chipset being installed first, would install and the chipset was listed as unknown under Everest.

Just doesn't make sense. It's like the machine has been locked to using Vista only as a reinstall from the discs that came with it has gone seemlessly.

Have you tried letting Windows search the installation discs fir the correct driver? Just tick the "Search Removable Devices" during Driver Update with the Asus CD in the drive. Hey, ya never know...

Yeah, have to say I've tried that too... it came with a seperate driver disc, unusual these days to get any discs, but that didn't do the trick either. It did pick up on a couple of drivers but not chipset unfortunatley.

Currently sitting here trying a fresh install of XP yet again and the chipset drivers from Intel, they are the ones that are specified on the ASUS site so fingers crossed.

Just never come across a machine that won't accept chipset drivers before and have built literally hundreds now.

aich69,

I know what you mean, all bets are off with Vista machines, especially laptops. It seems that many hardware companies are choosing not to make XP drivers available for new hardware intended for Vista. Never seen anything like it. I started a thread that went past 100 posts about trying to find a NIC driver for a common Gateway laptop:

thread602-1376645

It started June 10th of last year and finally, six months later, around Xmas, the XP driver was released. Hopefully you will be able to find a chipset driver sooner!!! One might also investigate which other notebooks have that chipset and try using their drivers...which exact components do you need? NIC, modem, wireless etc.

Did you index your hardware (write it down) in Vista before trying to install XP? If not, reinstall Vista and write down all the model #s for the parts in question. Best of luck!

Breakthrough!!

Turns out that I needed to install an a ACPI utility before anything else would install (odd). All drivers are on now with the exception of the Realtek HD Audio which reports I need to load the MS Bus Driver first. Seen this issue before so hopefully will get fix shortly.

Thanks for the input [smile]

aich69 - glad to hear that you got it that far... the MS BUS DRIVER should be a HotFix, if I remember correctly...

Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio class driver version 1.0a available for Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows 2000

Thanks Ben, picked that one up from MS & ASUS (have to search here though) so all is well now.

Just in case anyone else gets this problem, go down this road and you should be fine.

Install XP with SP's where neccesary.
Update the whole lot.
Install Chipset driver, then the ACPI utility and finally the UAA Hotfix.
You can now get on with installing all the other drivers, NIC, BT, WLAN, Realtek HD Audio etc

Might just save you the 'have I done this right I better do it again' scenario.

Thanks to all for inpout.

you're welcome...

there's nothing worse than reading a post that is similar to a problem you are having only to find it doesn't contain the final answer... the bit that will help! [smile]
