I would like to reinstall W2K Pro on my machine - but do
not want to lose my updates, drivers, favorites, email and
address book.

I do not mind reinstalling the software on my machine - it is just I do not want to lose some of the stuff that I have loaded.. is there a way I can back these things up and reload them easily in the process of an install?

TIA!!

Hi,

Some of them can be easily backed up:

IE Favorites/Cookies:
Go to File -> Import and Export and you can follow the wizard to export your favorites and cookies to files, which you can then reimport afterwards using the Import option on the system.

Assuming that you use outlook express for your email, you can use File -> Export -> Messages to export the messages and then reimport it after reinstalling. You can do the same with your address book.
These instructions will differ if you use an alternative email client.

As for drivers, I would download the latest Win2K drivers for your hardware from the manufactures for reinstallation afterwards.
WindowsUpdates will have to be re downloaded unless you specifically saved them elsewhere to be reinstalled later.

Thanks I appreciate the response.

You are probably better off downloading the latest drivers and saving them prior to your reinstall, as far as your favorites easy to copy and paste, the same for your address book.
I keep a copy of my favorites and address book on another drive and just prior to the install I copy and paste the favorites if there is any new it updates it.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. Is there anything else I need to be aware of as I prepare for this process? Any tutorials you can point me to that will help this become easier for me to do?

Hi,

I would note down the installed software on your machine, network connections (DHCP/Fixed IP etc, services), details of installed hardware (sound card, NIC, modem, webcam, cd burner etc), so you know which items should appear in device manager after reinstall, and if you need to get drivers later on, what to get.

I would also have another machine around with an internet connection if possible so that you can download any of this stuff or ask questions here if you get stuck. Doesn't need to be great - an old P200 with a modem and IE5 will do just fine.
