I am moving a 30 GB hard drive with all my data to a computer I just built. The new computer has a 20GB HD partitioned to a Primary DOS (Shown as C:\) and an Extended Logic Drive (Shown as D:\).

I have reassigned my CD-Reader as R:\ and the CD-Writer as W:\ When I put the 30 GB HD it comes up as D: and pushes the Logic drive to E:\ Is it possible to make the Primary Slave Drive E: instead of D: without reformating the drive as an Extended Logic Drive, thus loosing my data? what is your version of windows? FatesWebb

if you do what I suggested it is not my fault...

Do you intend keeping both drives in machine? If you're using win9x/ME these will assign C: to first partition on first drive, D: to first partition on second drive, then partitions/logical drives on first drive will get E:, F: etc, then remaining partitions/logical drives on second drive will get assigned next sequential letters. If you're using NT/2K/XP you can reassign drive letters using disk administrator/manager.

My OS is Windows 98SE. What I am trying to achieve is have the Primary hard drive (in 2 partitions of 10GB each) as C: & D: and the secondary hard drive (One partition of 30GB) as E:. Is there any way to make this happen or am I stuck with having the second partition of my primary hard drive as E:? [ponytails2] Oakwind

Unless you can find some clever third party software (or upgrade to win2k/XP), then you're stuck with Dos drive naming standards.

here is what you do sir, right click on my computer and go to properties, then go to device manage, expand your cd rom tab then go to their properties , next go to setting tab and at the bottom you will see , it will show your current and reserved drive letter, now you can make the start and end drive the same to reserve yor drive for that letter. now be carefull because if you have games or anything you mess em up bad, youll have to restart, then you can do that for you hdd. be beware of all of your programs not just games. i hope this answers your question or i just dont understand it.

Because you made a primary partition on the second hard drive, it became drive D:. If you erase this primary drive on the second hard drive, and only create an extended partition with a logical drive on it instead, it will fall in place as drive E:.

DOS will make the primary partitions as the first drive letters, and only after all those are assigned will the extended partitions be looked at. As long as you don't want to boot from the second hard drive, it can have only an extended partition.

PowerQuest utility Partition Magic will move & resize partitions without losing data. In a few operations, it could change your second disk to have only an extended partition, assuming you have a bit of extra disk space.

PM could resize your existing primary to a minimum, allowing space for an extended partition. Then copy existing partition to a logical drive and delete the primary. Then resize logical drive to use the entire disk.

If you have enough space, PM can temporarily resize all existing partitions to a minimum in order to get space for the above operations.
