Assigning DN to Empty Port

I have a MICS that I recently added a few station modules to. I punched down a few sets this morning only to find that all of the ports on my last station module are showing "none" for the assigned DN (in maintenance > port status). I know how to do a normal Change DN to assign the extension I want to the port, but that only works if there's an existing DN. Any advice on how to assign a DN to these empty ports?

Boy is my face red... Unfortunately it didn't work.

Originally I plugged all 4 phones in before I punched down the cross connects, and all of the phones were just flashing as if they were trying to pick up an extension for about an hour and a half. I unplugged all the phones and punched a single phone down directly to the block in the closet, and it's now been doing the same thing for about 25 minutes.

I just noticed on the alarm set that I have 4 alarms: 68-521616, 68-524628, and two occurrences of 68-52768. I looked up alarm code 68 and found it means "A device has been connected to a port which is not available for the device type." I'm using digital stations on digital station module, so I'm not sure why I'm getting this alarm. Could there be a problem with the module?

I think you need to disable that module in hardware then re-enable it to get the module to be recognized. alternately you might have a bad fiber port or cable. try swapping them out.

check under hardware and make sure the fiber port is set for station mod by default mod 3,4,5,6 are station and 8 is trunk

your what hurts?????

I verified that this module is set as a station module, but I don't see a way to disable the module under Hardware--only can change it between Station, Analog, and Data modules. Is there another place I should be looking for this?

The bad fiber port/cable is entirely possible, but unfortunately I'm a bit of a novice with this stuff (I'm a data guy, only know enough about phone systems to be dangerous), so that's something I'll have to bring in a vendor to check out if I can't get this working by some other means.

OK sorry the disable option is under maintenance >> module status.

bad fiber test is basically swap out a known good fiber patchcable with the suspect one

bad port test is basically swap the module to another port on the mics fiber card.

last possible is that the module might be bad.

Hmm--the module I'm working with is showing empty. Bad port/cable/module is starting to look likely.

Is it safe to swap the cable/port with the system powered on, or do I need to shut it down for that? All the known good ports are in use, but I can try it early morning tomorrow before hours.

Thanks for all the help!

I have been told that there is no reason to not be able to change out fibers on a hot system. I am cautious about swapping modules around on a hot system since there can be some unexpected defaulting (at least for me) when modules show up in new locations. if you do get a backup of your system first.

Yes, you can Hot-Swap modules of the same type. What Port are you trying to use?

Using port 13 (if that's how it's numbered)...

With jerryreeve's mention of "unexpected defaulting", we're starting to get out of my comfort zone. I don't know how to backup or restore the system, so if I take down a whole station module at 6:30 tomorrow morning and can't get it back up I'm pretty much screwed. At this point I think I'm going to call the guys that installed this thing--this is the first time I've used it and it doesn't work, so I would think it would be covered under the original installation charge.

They start at 3 thru 8 on the right-hand 6-Port Expansion Card, and progress to 9 thru 14 on the left-hand 6-Port Expansion Card. Ports 13 and 14 will not work if your software is not 7.0, at least.

Do you see the module in Maintenace/Module status but not the sets in Maintenace/Port Status?.

Is the 25 pair cable connecter in super snug?
Did you cross connect to only the first 16 pairs on the block?

I always make sure Set Relocation is set to N before swapping satation mods.

Aha! I think Deweyhumbolt may have solved my mystery: I don't think our software is up to 7.0. My version code reads 30BJG02, but I can't find "BJ" in the translations anywhere, so I'm not exactly sure what version I'm on. Anyone know?

As for which port I'm using, it's the 2nd from the top on the left expansion card, which I believe would make it 13. If it is, only 13 and 14 are free.

To answer curleycord's questions: It shows "empty" in matinenance/module status, and shows "none" for the DN in maintenance/port status. Ports 1401-1416 show up in port status as well, though, and I don't have a module 14, so I don't think that really indicates anything. I did check all the cables before I even posted here--fiber, 25 pair, etc. are all snug, power is on, and I punched down to the first four pairs.

If Deweyhumbolt's response is correct, what could I expect to reasonably pay for a software upgrade?

BJ is MICS 5.0 CDA XC version.

and on that version modules 13 and 14 are for companion portables only.

sorry I didn't mean to scare you off just to make a backup first.

Yeah you cannot use those 2 ports unless you have 7.1.
If you are out of ports (have checked all ports for all modules in maintenance/port status then you need to upgrade to open up 13 and 14.

Well the good news is that I'm not completely out of ports, so I'm OK. The bad news is that I bought a module that I can't use... the vendor did a site survey beforehand and was well aware of my software version, so I'm not sure why they wouldn't have told me I needed to upgrade to use that port.

What could I expect to pay for an upgrade to 7.1 from 5.0 installed?
