Assigning an IP address when connecting up a network printer

Hi
I am about to set up two printers onto my small network (which is on Small Business Server 2000) and need to know essentially how to set them up correctly so they show up on the network. Both printers have inbuilt print servers, and the instructions are very vague to say the least, just giving picture guidelines but no detailed text. The two printers are an HP laserjet 1300n and an OKI C5100n.

From the instructions it seems fairly straight forward for connecting them to the network - simply plug into a network connection and run a CD, that came with each printer, on any local pc (although I am not sure if the CD should be run on the actual server PC?). The only question I have is how do I assign an IP address for each printer when I connect them to the network?

I already have one existing network printer on my network but this was installed by an outside party. How can I find out the IP address of this existing networked printer (just so I do not assign the two new printers with this printer's IP)?

Thank you very much for any help. Much appreciated.

Kind regards

Are you running any variation of HP's JetAdmin software?

If so, that usually does a pretty good job of discovering HP printers automatically. At least the WebJetAdmin does. I believe it's version 7.

Next question is are you running DHCP or not? If you are you would want to exclude the IP's that you are going to use for the printers. Assigning IP's to the printers themselves should be done through the display on the printer.

After that is done you would want to create the new printers on your server. This should be done by adding new TCP/IP ports, using each printers respective IP address, sharing the printers.

This is how I've been doing it for quite some time now and I've never had a problem. I hope this helps and if you have any other questions feel free to ask.
