I have a series of 5 checkboxes in the "Instructions" portion of a User Step. I also have 5 attributes that correspond to each of the checkboxes. Is there a way that the user can click on the checkboxes in the Instructions and have the corresponding values set in the attributes (using code, etc..)? If so, how?

That is possible Matt, and a little tricky, there are two ways that spring to mind to achieve that :

1. Use an IFrame/New Window linked to the Instructions step which then interacts with some server side code which connects to the database and then updates the relevant tables using SQL.

2. Create a new OScript module to do this for you.

Have you considered migrating to Web/PDF forms as they offer a lot more functionality like this ? If you need more specifics or info let me know.
