A couple of months ago a new printer was installed on one of the pcs here. It works fine however every time Win98 starts up it states that it has detected "new" hardware (the printer) and wants to know where the drivers are. The drivers have been installed properly and the printer works.

I've tried to trick the system into reinstalling the drivers but that doesn't seem to work.

How do I stop the pc from detecting "new" hardware that isn't new at all?

Thanks!

PS My home pc does it occasionally also - only mine asks for a "new" modem.

Try these steps:

Locate and delete the wininit.ini file and make sure the only info under these registry keys is (Default)

backup the registry and/or export the following keys:
go to Start>Run, type regedit. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunServicesOnce

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

I have the same thing with an HP Deskjet 870Cxi. Started when I installed updated drivers from HP, only occurs if the printer is switched on when I boot. With the new drivers the printer is identified as just Deskjet 870 series but as Win98SE has specific drivers for the 870Cxi it keeps wanting me to install these. Trouble is they are not as good as the updated driver I have. I have checked on reghakr's suggestions but do not have a wininit.ini file and reg keys are all default only. I believe on another system where I used this printer previously I solved the problem by going ahead with the installation as requested by Windows at start up which then gave me two instances of the printer on the system. I then made sure that the one using the preferred driver was set to default. Have not worried about it on this system as the ptinter is only switched on when I need it, not normally at start up.
