Hi folks,

I have experience with Communication Manager, on the other hand Definity is an unexplored area for me.
Yesterday I went to a site where Definity G3,Version 11, is installed, to do some moves-and-changes. I found a proper serial port, connected my laptop(Windows XP, ASA 5.2 installed)but I couldn't establish the communication. Then I tried using TUTTY, set terminal emulator to 513, and it was OK.
Where did I go wrong ? Is ASA 5.2 compatible with G3 ?

The Curious

You can connect via ASA to either the SAT port (serial) or through the dial-up modem.

Kevin,

Thanks for reply.
I tried using serial port and ASA - no success.
When I tried serial port and TUTTY - it worked.
So ASA 5.2 is basically OK for using with G3?

The Curious

I tested ASA + modem connection. Works OK.
So ASA is OK.
Probably something was wrong in ASA serial port settings.

Is there a screen where I can see Definity serial port settings (Xon/Xoff RTS/CTS and similar)?

The Curious

were you using the cable that plugs into the SAT (if they even had a SAT terminal) or your own serial cable?

Goto Tools | System Properties

Select the Connections Tab

If the default connection ID is set to a Type other than Serial, highlight the connection type and click Properties, here you can change it to Direct serial port connection and set the COM port.

hi guys,

PBXTech,
Serial cable is OK. I used it for TUTTY terminal emulation, and communication worked perfect. I also have serial port tester, so I put it between PC and Definity. All hardware handshaking signals were active (DTR,DSR,RTS,CTS). Therefore I suppose that ASA is also using hardware handshaking.

Stinney,
I already tried to use direct serial connection in ASA, the same one you described, but it didn't work. Now I just want to know if communication parameters on Definity side are changeable or fixed? Am I able to read and change speed/number of bits/parity/handshaking on Definity side and what is ASA command for that?

The Curious

According to Avaya documentation for ASA, it sets the default port settings it needs and you shouldn't have to set them. It also ignores your windows settings for the ports and uses the ASA port settings.
