I am kind of confused on the differences between the ASA 5510 and ISR 2821. Do they both do the same thing as in security wise (firewall)?

The ASA has a bigger IPS/IDS database ans better firewall features but the 2821 has better routing capabilities and a larger overall feature set.
It comes down to how complex your environment is. If it has a lot or complex routing, GRE tunnels or BGP - go with the 2821. If is simple in that regard but you will make more use of the VPN and firewall features - then the ASA.

agree 100% with Brent.

The ISR series are much more complex to configure then the asa. You have the SDM to help you on the way but its still much easier to configure/manage the ASA.
