I just received an ASA 5510 router that I need to make work and I need a little help.

Currently I have a simple network… external IP range and internal IP range separated by a Cisco 506E PIX .

On Saturday, we are moving ½ of our network (the production front end ½) to a different building for more reliable uptime.

Both our internal and external subnets will be split in half by the greater IP Gods of the company. What I need to do is configure this new router to talk via IPSec tunnel to the PIX I currently am running and have all the machines be able to communicate.

On the PIX, I am NATing external IPs to the internal IPs.

I have never setup a router out of the box. What do I connect it to and what should I do to make it work? The network is not split yet so I just have the one internal and one external range of addresses. Can I configure it when it’s not on the network? Do I connect it to a computer that isn’t on the network or does it matter?

I have been reading and I believe I need it to be a routed firewall mode and not a multiple context mode.

I’m sure I’ve bit off more than I can chew but I am a fairly fast learner and I have no choice but to make this work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Did I mention that this is all happening on Saturday morning and that's when I am expected to make this work?

Thank you in advance!

Thank you very much... I will check out the information. I had read some info from the Cisco web site but this looks more like what I need.

If you run into problems, post over on the Cisco Systems: PIX Firewall board. You want more of the firewall and VPN config and the PIX 7x software is different enough from the IOS to cause confusion.

Thank you again. I will post on the Cisco Systems: PIX Firewall board if I run into problems. I think it would be a good idea for me to browse that board as well.

Thanks again and have a great day!
