I've got 3 AS5400s, each with a DS3(configured for ISDN) coming into it. Incoming calls dial an 800 number that is supposed to ultimately reach a VRU. The calls are failing on one of the three AS5400s. This worked for months before today. No changes were made, and I suspect the telco is at fault, but can't prove it.

I have ISDN q931 debugs from both the working and non-working AS5400s. Below is an example of a failure(yeah, I know the date is all F'd up):

*Jun 16 07:40:07.522: ISDN Se7/0:18:23 Q931: RX <- PROGRESS pd = 8 callref = 0xDEC3
Cause i = 0x8181 - Unallocated/unassigned number
Progress Ind i = 0x8188 - In-band info or appropriate now available
*Jun 16 07:40:07.526: ISDN Se7/0:23:23 **ERROR**: U7_ProgressReq: Sending PROGRESS in state 7 is not allowed. Dropping it
*Jun 16 07:40:07.526: ISDN Se7/0:23:23 **ERROR**: Ux_BadMsg: Invalid Message for call state 7, call id 0x29A0, call ref 0x99CA, event 0x89
*Jun 16 07:40:07.526: ISDN **ERROR**: Module-l3_sdl_u Function-Ux_BadMsg Error-Source ID = 400 Event = 89
*Jun 16 07:40:07.530: ISDN Se7/0:7:23 **ERROR**: U7_ProgressReq: Sending PROGRESS in state 7 is not allowed. Dropping it
*Jun 16 07:40:07.530: ISDN Se7/0:7:23 **ERROR**: Ux_BadMsg: Invalid Message for call state 7, call id 0x2986, call ref 0x999F, event 0x89
*Jun 16 07:40:07.530: ISDN **ERROR**: Module-l3_sdl_u Function-Ux_BadMsg Error-Source ID = 400 Event = 89
*Jun 16 07:40:08.522: ISDN Se7/0:24:23 Q931: RX <- CALL_PROC pd = 8 callref = 0xDEE6

I think those references to call state 7 is the CONNECT state. It seems this router's local ISDN switch is reverting to sending Progress messages (state 3) whilst the router is expecting Setup Acknowledgement and data transfer.

Call establishment over ISDN goes through the following states:

Call Establishment

000 00001 Alerting
000 00010 Call Proceeding
000 00011 Progress
000 00101 Setup
000 00111 Connect
000 01101 Setup Acknowledge
000 01111 Connect Acknowledge

I agree with you in that I believe it's your local Telco switch especially in light of the fact that nothing has been changed on the ISDN routers in question.

Turned out that telco had some kind of translation screwed up. They fixed it after leaned on them enough.

Thanks'
