Up until now, I was positive I did it right. But my CPU temps are a little high: 46/56c idle/load on a P4 2.4 @ 3.1ghz. I read up on the AS3 sight and followed using the plastic bag on the heat sink and then using a credit card on the slug. That came out a bit rough (edges of the card and little inconsistencies on the card itself) so I smoothed it out with the bag. I did this a few times and before I popped it in the mobo, I could visibly see the writing on the slug (espec number, processor type etc). I was wondering if AS3 application was supposed to be thick enough to cover the slug or it is supposed to be that thin.

It is supposed to be thin, just put a small blob on the die and scrape it around with a card to get a thin layer.
Your temps don't sound all that high, but of course it's the ambient temp that makes a big difference in what temps you get. If the air in your case/room is hot then the cpu cooler can only do so much...Some extra case fans can help.
