Hi,

I'm using ARCserve to backup about 20 servers. I don't have any errors in the ARCserve logs - all the backups are completed successfully.

I have setup ARCserve to use a local user on the backup server as its Service Account (to configure this setting, you have to go in the "ARCserve Backup Server Admin", then click on the "Admin" menu, and then choose the "BrightStor ARCserve Backup System Account...".

The settings are the following :
User Name : user_for_arcserve_service
Domain : backup_server_name

The settings have been changed, the ARCserve services restarted and even the server rebooted.

However, when I look in the logs of the Domain Controller, I see a lot of errors :

Network logon of backup_server_name\user_for_arcserve_service from backup_server_name (via server_name_being_backed_up) Entered
Network logon of backup_server_name\user_for_arcserve_service from backup_server_name (via server_name_being_backed_up) Returns 0xC0000064

0xC0000064 means that the user account doesn't exists - which is true, as the domain controller doesn't know the users from the backup servers. Those errors show up about 100 times per second in the logs.

So I guessed that the problem was in the backup job. So I went in the ARCserve Manager, right-clicked on the backup job, and then on "Modify User Name". I removed what was there and entered the account that must be used to backup the server. Then I also clicked to modify the job, and I right-clicked on the server being backed up, and choose "Security...". I filled the userid and password again, and saved the job. I have even rebooted the server - but I still get the same errors each night during the backups.

Anyone has an idea of something I should try to do??

Hi speshalyst,

Thank you for that information. I have just setup the account with all the rights, except that I haven't added it to the "Domain Admin" group.

The reasons why I didn't are the following - please, tell me if I'm wrong :

- All the information to login to other servers are in the jobs, so the ARCServe service can be running with a local user, as long as it has full access to the backup server.

- Anyway, I have to backup servers from several domains that don't trust each other (4 different domains and 2 stand-alone servers), so even if the ARCserve Service Account was in the Domain Admin group, it would be useless for a lot of servers.

- This setup works with another backup server using exactly the same OS, ARCserve version and patches, hardware.

- This error only happens with one of the servers being backed-up (well, the PDC logs get full, so can't see all potential errors, but I know that there are a bunch of servers backed up after that one that don't generate any errors on the PDC).

I'll try this setup and tell you when I know if it works or doesn't work.

Thank you very much for your help, your tip was helpful.
