Runnign Arcserve for Netware 6.6.

The Arcserve database is 1.2Gb which i have been told is too large and is the reason why i am not getting all the information an the tape dsplayed in the database after a backup.

On Tuesday i ran a Pruning job on the database to prune any records older than 6 months. the job took most of tuesday.

Wednesday, I started a Packing Job as soon as i got in at about 08:45 and the job was still running when i left last night at 18:30. The job said there were 15,000,000 records in the database and when i got in this morning the database was still 1.2Gb.

What have i done wrong? How do i reduce the size of the Database?

Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

KevinQ.

at the server console with arcserve loaded type
asdb p=astpsdat.db
This will pack the database and tidy up what the prune job has removed.
Also you can run
asdb f=astpsdat.db
this will fix the database. You can run these operations on all databases in the arcserve.6\database directory

I have inherited a system where the sys volume was set too small to start with, and as the Arcserve database has grown, it has taken up all the spare capacity on the volume :-(
I now have the situation where the ASTPSDAT.DB is too big, and every time I try and pack it I run out of disk space.
What I need to know is how to prune the DB to a managable size first, so that I can then repack the thing...
If this is a somewhat basic question I apologise, but hey, we all gotta start somewhere :-?)
I should of mentioned [my bad] the to pack a database you need to have the size of the database in free space.... but this is netware so there is an easy way round.
1. Stop arcserve [astop6]
2. Stop btrieve [bstop]
3. in sys:arcserve.6\emptydb there are 22 files that are a fresh database. remove all file content from sys:arcserve.6\database and then copy the emptydb files over and reload arcserve [astart6].

You will loose all restore window information and media pools etc. but its a fresh start and now you know how to pack the databases
You can run a prune database job every night from Arcserve server manager.

and all the prune job will do is remove records from the astpsdat but will not free up any hard drive space untill a pack is preformed.
