I have Arcserve 9.0 Build 2052 installed on a Windows 2000 Server.

There is an incremental backup that runs at 23.40pm every night, and is a full backup on a Friday.

The last two nights, the backup hasn't run correctly, the following error appears in the log:
'Media in device group GROUP0 is not in the scratch set of pool Servername'

There are five tapes in the tape drive.

I'll paste the full log below.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Hi,
Check your media pool.
Under the daily for example you have a save and a scratch set. Arcserve can only write to tapes that are in the scratch set (unless the tape is a blank tape). So even if you have 5 tapes in the tape drive it will not work until you don't have one of those tapes in the scratch set.

I hope you find this post helpful.

GSC

I checked the Media Pool:

Under 'Save set', there are three entries, all from about three years ago.

Under 'Scratch set', there are a lot of entries for each day of the week.

How can I ensure, that the tapes that I mount each night are part of the Scratch set? Do I have to manually assign them each night, Under Media Pool/Assign?

Thanks

The tapes that you have in the scratch set must also match whatever you have in your device. Is that the case?
Also if they do match and you still get a failed you need to check the expiration date on your tapes. If it has expired it will fail as well.

If you have a working rotation then you should not have to manually assign them. But I have been working with this product for six years now and I've learned one lesson:
You'd better be safe than sorry.
Check your media pool as a part of your daily backup routine just to make sure that the tapes have been moved.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,
GSC
