Hello,

I am having a problem with Arcserve recognizing all of the tapes and I hope that you can help.

When I came in today I found that Arcserve was reporting a hardware error. I used the "Unload & Exit" option from the Arcserve program and then used "astop6" at the command line. I turned off the tape drive and unplugged it.
I plugged in the tape drive, turned it on and typed the command "astart6" at the command line. the program started normally, but will only recognize one tape. What did I miss?

The magazine was in the drive and a tape was not loaded.

It is on a Novell Server.

Go to support.cai.com and check if this changer is certified for arcserve 6 .

DavidMichael,

I am starting to think that...

I have two changers and neither one works, so I am going to send one back to HP and see if there is something wrong with it.

HP SureStore DAT 24x6

Mohamdr,

The changer has worked properly in the past. This is not a new setup.

---------------------------------

another thing:

The menu "Changer Management" is no longer available either.

Did you install and license the Tape Library Option ?
Also check if the SCSI board supports 'multiple LUN's'(ie. is able to divide a SCSI id into Logical Unit Numbers so it will be able to see both changer and drive and not only the changer or only the drive).

regards

Hi Cyklops,

This was a previously installed unit. This is not a new install. I think my tape drives are bad. One keeps reading "Clean Me" even though I keep running the cleaning tape (Yes it says [Cleaning] on the tape drive's LCD display). And my other tape drive keeps giving me a read error. While I write this, I am on hold waiting to talk to a rep at HP to see if the units are covered under warranty...

Well, I tested one of my drives (the one I have been using) and it works fine. I got a program from HP that tests the drive and it claims that the hardware is functioning properly. The changer has been used on the server before. So something needs to be configured so that the software sees that this is a multiple tape changer. It was setup this way before, so i know it is possible, I just can't seem to figure out what I am missing!!! Argh!

Mohamdr,

It is definitely on the list:

HP SureStore DAT 24e (C1556A) L610 12-24 GB

Try this.
Stop ARCserve, all the services and the Manager,
Delete everything under the Tape Engine key in the registry (except debug and barcode if they are there)
Run the Device Configuration Utility
Bring up ARCserve

Hello davidmichel,

I have little to no experience with Novell. I am a Microsoft Sys Admin. I don't even know how to access the Novell Registry. I am very familiar with the Microsoft version. How do I access it in Novell?

Sorry I missed the last line were it said it was on a Novell server, and thought it was on Windows.

Davidmichel,

Thanks anyway!

Anybody else have any suggestions?

I am all ears!!!!

I restarted the server again and this time it recognized 2 devices on the scsi card and I got the changer management menu back. But now I just get "the changer is not initialized".

Any help would be appreciated!

I setup the drive on a windows 2000 server and I am having the same problem! I ran HP's software and tested the drive. It is working properly. I tried putting a cleaning tape in slot 6, I have installed all of the latest drivers for the SCSI Board and the tape drive. I have the latest firmware on the drive and I have the changer option installed.

davidmichel:
"well maybe there is a hardware problem."

Ding, ding, ding - We have a winner. I replaced the drive and that solved the problem. So much for the HP diagnostic software!!

Diagnostic software just tests basic functionality and can not reproduce specific situations that happen in real life.
