Our office in Finland is using ArcServe 6.61 and is trying to merge a tape back into the database. In the activity log warnings and errors appear and the sessions fail to merge. The messages are: -
W3503 Unable to add directory to database (DIR=data, EC=-1)
E4009 Wait on object error (MODULE=ASDBNT.DLL Object=EmptySemaphore EC=InvalidHandle)
E3503 Unable to add directory to database (DIR=Hardware, EC=-1)

And so on, each entry to be merge puts a E3503 in the log and its either "Unable to add directory (DIR=" or "Unable to add directory (FILE=".

Normal backups are taking place each day, the database engine is running and there are no other warnings or errors in the activity log to indicate a problem. Pruning is running daily and I asked for the time after which records are pruned to be reduced to 14 days (from the std 30). I have also asked for SP2a to be installed - the problems are still happening. Disk space isn't an issue. Anyone have any ideas of what to do next?

Either the backup was done on a different version of ARCserve or there is database corruption.

Use DBMGR to check and do a full pack of the database.

Hi
even if the backup taken from different version it should work this should't be an issue.

DavidMichel is correct this maybe database corruption

check the support site for the doc on How to maintain Arcserve database.

Thanks DavidMichel and Mohamdr. I thought it was database related but the backup jobs all appear to be working OK ! Mine you, I have been running ArcServe since 1996 and nearly all the problems I've seen have been with the database and that includes the VLDB as well as the RAIMA. I have asked our guy in Finland to check the database.

Once again, thanks guys.

Hi
My Advice to you it to upgrade to SQL instead of using VLDB
or Ramia ,SQL is More MOre MORE... Stable.

Mohamdr
