Arcserve 2000 5

I have an NT 4 server sp6a with Arcserver 2000 sp3. After last night I was unable to start the Database engine. In the log I get the message E5201 Unable to create a process object (ec=bad exe format).
I have deleted the 2 rdm files in the database directory, checked the share and permissions, and done the reg hack to include the qutation marks for the services.
Please help!!!

if you know what you changed change it back otherwise
The fastes way is to save your database and you jobs as
scrips and unistall/reinstall

Mohamdr gave little help, did you ever find a fix chester, I did all the reg fixes(" &quot patches ect. as well, but with no fix for DB engine yet??? Help

I'm afraid not, spent hours on the phone to CA about this, in the end we moved to a new server and all ok, You can try this one though. Goto the arcserve directory. Job all engines. In the arcserve directory there is a folder called q.ooooo1, in this directory cut all the files out and then start all engines, and re-create all jobs again. If that fails try removing Arcserve 2000, reboot, delete the CA directory, apply the NT4 SP again, reboot then re-install.

Delete a file PROGRAM with no extensions on the drive where
arcserve is installed.....

Then your database engine will start ...

I bet ..

Try installing it on the old server .. IT WILL RUN...

The "program" file was there and I deleted it......nothing happens.....slam head off desk..... get out Windows 2000 Server Cd....FDISK...reload....looks ok now 3 days later?

Thank you, Databasebaba! Your suggestion worked for us, and it was the only instance of that solution I found anywhere on the internet. Once we deleted PROGRAM, everything started working again. You saved me and our Amsterdam IT manager alot of time and pain. Excellent!

Yes, databasebaba gave an excellent hint what to look for.

Unfortunately there was no file called PROGRAM on our problem server. But I found one called "BrightStor" exactly at the same directory level as "BrightStor ARCserve Backup" - the base directory of ARCserve.

It seems that if the path to your ARCserve database contains any directory with a space character in its name and you have at the same directory level a file (or directory?) with a name exactly the same as the directory in question up to the space character ARCserve won't be able to find its database.

I think its easier to understand with these examples:

Ex1:
"C:\Program Files\BrightStor ARCserve Backup\DATABASE" - dir
"C:\Program" - file
Ex2:
"D:\CA\BrightStor ARCserve Backup\DATABASE" - dir
"D:\CA\BrightStor" - file

ARCserve seems to have a problem browsing to the database directory in those cases.

In our case the file "BrightStor" was there because I forgot to put quotation marks around the path name when copying some log files with a self-written .CMD within the ARCServe path. So the copy destination path was truncated to "D:\CA\BrighStor". Bingo!

Took me three days to figure this out :-( and was the final reason to join Tek-Tips ;-)

To be fair, when I last looked at this I think this is more a windows problem rather than an ARCserve bug. I'm sure there is an MS article on it somewhere, I have come across this problem with other software.
