We currently have a problem restoring from end of year tapes and our most recent tapes. It appears that the database engine has not being running for sometime, although according to the logs, the most recent backups have being successful.

When i try to start the restore, after i select the proper media, i usually have a choice of sessions from where i can browse to the selected files. In the most recent tapes, i dont have this option... it just tells me that "There are no items to display in this view".

Im guessing that this is all a result of the database engine not running. I have got it up and running again and will check in the morning to ensure the backup and restore is working. My problem is that when i go to restore from the most recent tapes i have no sessions from which browse to the correct file. Is there any way of getting this data to restore?

Also, we are running ARCserve 2000 V7, build 1086. I have being trying to find SP5 on the CA website, but they appear to have stopped support for this. Does anyone know where else i can get my hands on SP5?

Any help appreciated.

Paddy

You can also try running a merge job from the tape that you want to restore files from.

I managed to get SP5 and get in installed (ty vschumpy) and everything rebooted fine. Afterwards though a process called "rds.exe" was eating up all the processor power. Also, when i tried to open the ARCserve Manager interface, the db engine wont run now.

My question is, what should i do now? This whole backup lark was dumped on my lap after the last manager left and the new one arrived and i have no experience whatsoever with the software.

Again, any help very much appreciated

Regards
Paddy

I have tried what is suggested in the links but im still unable to initialise the database because i cant get the db engine to start. I rebooted it, but nothing. I killed the rds.exe process and tried to start it from within ARCserve but nothing there either. I have also tried to start the engine through services in the control panel but it still hanging the server. Is there any other way to initialise it?

You can try deleting all the files in the database dir that start with raaa. If that doesn't work, you'll have to start with a fresh database. To do this, uninstall Arcserve, rename the database directory and reinstall Arcserve to the same directory as before. Your jobs will be there but you will have to recreate your groups and media pools.

Hey BEley,

I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling ArcServe. I had to merge all the the sessions again, but i managed to get there eventually. Things are working fine now(fingers crossed).

Ty for the replies.

Cool. I would recommend upgrading. Arcserve 2000 is no longer supported by CA and is too buggy IMHO compared to Arcserve 9/11.x

We are looking at that very shortly. I hjave a quote from CA for the latest software, but were holding off at the minute. Were installing 3 new servers and overhauling the server structure within the company as well as going AD... so should be fun!!!
