I have recently over a period of time upgraded Arcserev to 11.5 SP2 on 26 backup servers, I have run into issues on 2 of them where it has killed the speed. What once backed up at 800 MPS is now 175 MPS Servers both Dell 6600's all SCSI drivers and firmware are updated, also the Dell PVT 120 LTO 2 firmware and driver are updated. I even went as far as disabling the Dell PVT's hardware drivers and Arcserve use its, this has work in the past. This backup job has went from 3 hrs to 15 and does finish in time for the daily rotation, I do not want to change the jobs to Differential.
Any thoughts?

Honestly most of the time when I have come across this type of claim it turned out to be unrelated to the update. However that is "most" and not all the time.

So if you really think it is due to the update then pick your worst performing server and install SP3.

If you are running a SAN it is not so easy but you can still test it by stopping ARCserve on all the servers. Pick that worst server and set it up as a Primary and do some test backups.

It also might be worth the time to go through the activity log to see how the throughput has been. Did it really go down after the backup or was it going down for some time and then just noticed (no implications here, just speaking from past experience so please don't take offense)after the update. Also look to see if the throughput is the same for all sessions. Perhaps some sessions are screaming fast but a few are so slow it is causing the overall problem.

We ran into the same problem when we upgraded to SP2. It hit us slowly over a period of time so you can probably expect more servers to get hit. We had jobs that ran on the weekends run for days instead of hours. We've gone round and round with CA for more than 7 months and they claim there is no problem. When we upgraded our development server to SP3, the problem appears to have ended on that server. We've ran with no problem for approx 6 weeks. We're contemplating upgrading the rest.

Thank you davidmichael and BETuser, I have since upgraded 1 server with SP3 and have seen the speed come back to and above the original speed. I am going to try another server tonight and see what happens, I have a good backup from the weekend so Im safe.

Thanks

Kraker1,

You don’t mention if you have upgraded the client agents as well.
Although, any SP will be backwards compatible, it is advisable to upgrade client agents to the same level as the Backup Server. Only this way you will be able to take the full advantage of any improvements.

Regards,

Michael
