I have just installed Arcserve on a Dell NAS device running Windows 2003 Server Appliance Edition. After updating Arcserve and running the first full backup, I rebooted the server and was presented with a Windows error message saying that a service had failed to start.

The event log showed that the Portmap service had not started. This was caused by a conflict with Arcserve's 'CA Remote Procedure Call Server'.

Unfortunately, CA's support connect site was no use (again [sad]), but I discovered a work-around on eventID here:

Question: Why are my BrightStor ARCserve Backup services failing to initialize
Answer: If BrightStor ARCserve Backup detects that it is using the same port number for the CA Remote Procedure call server service as a previously installed portmapper by detecting port 111 conflicts, BrightStor ARCserve Backup automatically switches to another port number.

To avoid having other software affected by a similar problem, change the Automatic status of the CA Remote Procedure call server service to Manual. If you have installed BrightStor ARCserve Backup in a Microsoft Cluster Services environment, change the Automatic status of the CA Remote Procedure call server service to Disabled. This enables you to avoid similar port conflicts after the system has completed the boot process.

BrightStor ARCserve Backup can work with external Portmappers (SFU 3.0, Noblenet Portmapper, StorageTek Libattach etc.). However, during the machine boot up sequence, BrightStor ARCserve Backup services may try to initialize before the external portmapper has fully initialized. Under these circumstances, BrightStor ARCserve Backup services then fail to initialize. To avoid this problem, perform the following steps:
Create the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\ComputerAssociates\BrightStor ARCserve Backup\Base\Portmap
Create the DWORD DelayedRegistration under this key.
Assign a decimal value for this key, indicating the number of minutes BrightStor ARCserve Backup services wait before initializing portmapper registration. For example, DelayedRegistration=2 causes all BrightStor ARCserve Backup services to start but not register with the portmapper for 2 minutes after startup.

Formatting was lost so if you want pull it directly from their site.

When I queried CA's Support Connect for Portmap service nothing was shown. I have frequently searched CA's site for help and have been unsuccessful. That is why I search this forum in the first instance whenever I have an Arcserve problem.

Folks like you have saved my bacon more than once :)

CA has actually listened to complaints like this about the support site and are working on redoing it. So look for changes and hopefully good ones, and specifically the search engine is one of the things being addressed.

Thanks for the star.

That's good news. I took part in a Brightstor Arcserve useability survey a while ago and highlighted the disappointing performance of the search engine. I am pleased they are addressing this. It will help a lot of people and also help to improve CA's seemingly diminishing prevalence in the backup market.
