Comes out in the UK on Feb 2nd, and they are going to release a new version every year... Me thinks this is going to be instead of bothering to use patches.. just think we'll soon be on version 2009 and it will still have the same database issues..

Have not heard anything about there being a new version every year, but there will be updates. There is always new hardware to support and features that did not make it into the release that need to get added it. So safe to say there will always be updates.

from my experiance with CA they will never solve this problem ,it is better for you to convert the datbase to SQL, it is more stable.
with veritas Backupexec when you install it it install SQL runtime and you don't need for license but in CA u need a license for it and this the problem.

from my experiance 30 % of problem with BrightStorEB & arcserve are from it is database.

I don't know who desgined this database it is really bad idea, if CA from begining used SQL as a default like veritas they would atract alot of clients and save their current cleints, but nobody from CA taken this in considrations and they will never take it in their consideration in new relases at all,
this problem was exist since long time from first realse till today ,since 9 years when they inquured cheyane the previous owner of Arcserve.

You deserve a response.
Now lets see...
"if CA from begining used SQL as a default like veritas"
Sorry when ARCserve NT was first released Windows was version 3.5 and MS SQL was not an option.

"but nobody from CA taken this in considrations"
Really! you have checked with all 10,000 + employees, that is hard to believe.

"and they will never take it in their consideration in new relases at all"
Now you can tell the future too, amazing.

Perhaps it would be more benificial, and this is a note to all ARCserver users, to let CA know that you want them to replace the Velocis VLDB with MSDE (see my thread on MSDE which can not be used with ver.11). CA setup a new way for clients to express their ideas and wants. Go to (you have to register to get in) and use the suggestion box. Every suggestion is reviewed by the development team, and I have seen changes made that were a direct result of a user supplied suggestion.

I tested the beta b4 - the new tape catalog feature is great. Maintain a small database, yet give the flexibility to automatic merge back data from catalog files if restore is required (do not need to merge from tapes).

Yes it seems to work pretty good. CA is about three or four rev's behind in the Velosis DB and to keep it working they came up with a pretty good idea.

To explain for those not familure with it.

When the new calalog feature is used there is a new directory created. This directory keeps a copy of all the *.cat files. With each backup the detailed listing of directories and files backed up is not put into the database. Instead it is merged in automaticly when needed, pulling the data from the saved cat files.

It has definately given new life to the VLDB. Oh and by the way another use tipped me off that MSDE only works up to 2gb so that is not viable for most users anyways. Perhaps that is the reason why it can not be used in version 11.

But,
If there will be another folder for *.cat files then we need huge disk space since i had a database problem and backup was done without merging the *.cat to vldb database cat files stayed in temp folder, imagine the size for one dlt 160/300 tape was 300+ MB how it is going to be for one month of backup?!!!!

1-Can you give more info about this feature?
2- If this feature is in arcserve 11 (I have read the new features on arc 11 but I have never read somthing like this?

It is enabled via a check box in the Server Admin Enable Tape Catalog. Then stop all the services and the manager and restart. After the first backup there will be a new directory under BEB CATALOG.DB. It will have a subdirectory for each job labeled with the date and time which contains the catalog file/s.

As for how much space it will take up, it probably will take up more space, but I don't know how much more. For customers that have a database over a few gig it will not make much difference in light of the benfits.

The note in the help file says to only use this option for large environments that have large amounts of data. So for most users the bottom line is don't bother.
