I am running arscerve 2k with service pack 4 on a windows NT server with SP6a. We had another problem prior to this were the backup job would show up as active and there was no way to stop/delete the job. Even a reboot wouldn't help. We were able to solve that problem, but then this new one started right afterwards. This is the log I would get, "Media in device group GROUP0 is not in the scratch set of pool". Next line would be "Insert media (blank)."

Things I've done so far:

1) Create a brand new job (which usually works).
2) In backup Options (within the job), I checked Overwrite Same Media Name or Blank Media First, then Any Media.

Are there any patches for this problem?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

well, if you are using media pools try formatting the media and designating it to the scratch set of the "desired" media pool. Then see if it uses that tape. Basically the job is going to grab the tape that appears in the scratch set because of your rotation scheme. Try that and see if it works.

Anyway, twas just a thought.

What type of media pool are you using (default, rotation, custom, GFS)?
If you assign a tape to group0 with a retaintion of say 6 days Arcserv will look for another tape (or blank tape) assigned to the same group. If no other tapes are assigned or blank, the job will fail. That tape will not be not be overwritten until you have 5 completed jobs in "group0".
You can move another tape into "group0" and put it into "scratch set".

Hope this helps......

Thanks for your replies!

I am using GFS media pool. I've will try these suggestions. I will let you know if I get it working.

Thanks!!!

Figured out the problem. The backup job was set to 11:30 pm while the pruning job was set at the default at 12 am. It would back up the first 2 sessions, but when it started to back up the 3rd session, it would ask for a blank tape. Moving the pruning job to 5 am did the trick. This is one less thing I got to worry about.
