archive logs on Oracle reducing in size after backup

I am running ArcserveIT 6.61 on an Oracle8i database. We backup the archive logs created from the database 2 times each night. After the second backup the log files are deleted. Since going to 8i, after the backup is done the archive log files drop from 5mb to 1K and then back to 5mb (as they should be) after arcserve has finished. This causes the log file itself to screw up. In looking at the registry under software/arcserve I see that there is a loglevel key that is set to 1. I am curious what the 1 means in terms of the logs. If so should it be set to 0 and could this be causing our problem.
