I have a very old Aptiva (640MB/1.6GB) running Win98; haven't used it in about four months but have never lost or disconnected power. Now on the startup screen, after clocking out the memory as usual, it posts

178 System-security error--VPD not available

and the entire thing locks up... I've tried F1 and Esc during the clock to no avail, and no keystrokes have any effect. One time the Configuration screen came up and I checked all my settings but everything seemed fine... I want to give the machine to a friend but now it's completely frozen!
Any thoughts are much appreciated

Check all your connections to see if one is not loose. Also check to see if the cards are seated properly... Remove and re-install each card. In Windows VPD means a problem with the printer,,,, but you are not getting there.

Good luck, and keep us informed

VPD is an abbreviation for "Virtual Printer Device", and also "Virtual Private Database"

Whilst the former is hopefully your problem, the latter is more to do with security and could be the result of an out of date firewall or antivirus (less likely) application.

It is difficult knowing which it could be, but I hope that you have a better insight into the problem and hopeful correction.

Phil
