I have a fairly new G3 AppleShare IPWeb and File server that hosts only a few users, but is responsible for nightly remote backups -- Retrospect v. 4.1Ai

This server occasionally just hangs up -- no bomb, no error message.

Also, I have one user who (no matter how many times I remove and re-add to the list) is not getting backed up. (Using client v.3, just like everyone else) I also make sure that the user Mac is waiting for the Retrospect backup to occur.

In the morning, the Retrospect screensaver is showing, but the Mac needs to be control-apple-started.

Any Advice?
Thanks
What version of Ipshare are you using?

Are you using tcp/ip or appleshare as your network protocol?

what Mac OS version are you running..

Let me know and I might have a few suggestions..

it could be if you are using tcp/ip sometimes it loses the connection when you have "only use tcp/ip when required" box is checked. If it is checked uncheck it. you find this in the tcp/ip control panel..advanced user options

There is only a SMALL chance that this is the issue, but if all the connections are 100BaseT (and not 10BaseT) there is a chance that somewhere in the loop the category 5 wire has been compromised. If so, the physical wires are unable to support the sustained 100Mbps throughput..

For example, if a patch cord or other network cable was ever kinked, or if it was hand made and has more than 1/2 inch of untwisting at the connector, it is no longer considered a cat 5 cable, and therefore unable to sustain a 100Mbps connection, even though it might support the connection long enough to login and whatnot.

If you look and realize your wiring may be in question, check
<A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> fairly easy to understand industry cabling standards.

But please don't let this advice send anyone on a wild goose chase.

Make sure no workstation (especially the one experiencing the problems) is
connected to the "uplink" port on the hub. If not, try switching the suspected
cable with another on the hub & see what happens.
David J. tips from reading other postings.
If you have any questions or comments, please email.

You need the Appleshare Memory Manager Init available from the Apple web site and available on later IP disks
