Appendable Until = Infinite - Allow Append
Overwrite Protected Until - Overwritable
Appendable Until = Infinite - Not Appendable

Can't change "Appendable Until = Infinite - Not Appendable"

I created a media set called Daily for my daily backups.

All of the tapes are set to tollowing except 1 tape:
Overwrite Protected Until - Overwritable
Appendable Until = Infinite - Allow Append

The 1 problem tape is set to this
Overwrite Protected Until - Overwritable
Appendable Until = Infinite - Not Appendable

How can I change this 1 tape to be
Appendable Until = Infinite - Allow Append

I have 10 tapes the swap out each night for the backup and want to be able to write over the tapes when they are filled.

Thanks.

That 1 problem tape, maybe it is full - so you won't be able to append to it anymore - so the next operation on the tape will be overwrite.

The tape is completely full but the tape says
Appendable Until = Infinite - Not Appendable

I need to tape to say
Appendable Until = Infinite - Allow Append
so that I am able to append to it.

Any ideas?

Yes, overwrite the tape and then if there is any room left on the tape it will allow append.
You can't append to a full tape, so why would you want to force it to say Allow Append?

I have 10 tapes the swap out each night for the backup and want to be able to write over the tapes when they are filled. The tapes hold 200 gigs and I backup 25 gigs a night. After 8 days the tape is full so the tape needs to automatically start to overwrite. The problem tape is FULL. I need the 1 tape to be Appendable Until = Infinite - Allow Append . 9 tapes are set to this but one is set to
"Appendable Until = Infinite - Not Appendable".

The only place I can see where to change this is when you create a new media set. How can I change this 1 tape to Appendable Until = Infinite - Allow Append.

I will try and explain again - the tape is full, you cannot append to it, the only way to make the tape appendable again is to overwrite the tape.

To be able to append to a tape again, you MUST overwrite it first so the tape will get a backup set on it - then the tape will change to Allow Append.

Even if you erase the tape - the tape will still be not appendable until you write something to the tape - then you can append to it.

Remember append means to add to something that is already there.

BTW, if this is what you are thinking - your tapes do not get to the end, and then start again from the start of the tape, overwriting just the first 25gb of the tape - it overwrites the tape wiping all data from it and effectively starting again on the tape.

Justin,

I want all my tapes to work like this.
Append to the previous backup until the tape is Full, then start to overwrite from the beginning and continue to append until the tape is full again. Then overwrite again and continue this process. In order for this to happen I set the media set to this.

Appendable Until = Infinite - Allow Append
Overwrite Protected Until - Overwritable

Is this correct?

Also, how can I overwrite this 1 tape that I am having a problem with? Where do you do this in Veritas?

Thanks for all your help.

Pete

Just move the tape to the Scratch media set - then it will be available to be overwritten the next backup job.
