I am experiencing an extremely long (3-7 min) response time for an office app (Word or Excell or Access, etc...) to load and the file appear in the app window when I select (double click) a file from a directory window. If the application is started first and the file is selected with the app's "file" menu, all is well.... everything loads within seconds. This problem occurs with files on the local machine and across the network.

I am running XP SP2 (everything currently updated) and Office XP apps on a 1GHZ PIII with 512 RAM. I have cleaned up the machine with Ad-Aware, Spy-Bot Search and Destroy, and Registry Mechanic. ( there was nothing profound about what these utilities found and fixed.) I have also performed a repair of XP using the installation CD, as well as installing a new NIC.

Any suggestions what or where to check next...?? Hope I don't end up nukeing and re-installing everything.

Thanks,
WinN

If the application is started first"
How long does it take for the application to load in this situation?

When I start the app first from the Start/Programs menu, or from a desktop shortcut icon, it takes only a second or two for the app to come up. Then if the desired file is opened from the app's File drop-down menu it loads within a second or two.

franklin97355,

chkdsk shows no errors, bootup memory scan passes ok.

Memory test" means a program such as "MemTest86". What anti-virus prigram are you using? Try dis-abling it and see if the files open any faster.

Does it take as long to start up if you double click on an associated file as it does when you just open up one of those programs to start a new file? If so, the template document could be the problem, from the research I just did through Google.
