Hey guys,

I have an apartment complex that I want to setup with Internet. Currently there is cat5 ran to every room. I have 6 building that I want to connect in a start topology. My question is what hardware do you suggest for this setup. I planned on vlan switches and using fiber as the apartment to apartment connection. We are guessing on 60% usage so we will have approx 180 users. My main concern is bandwidth limiting.

Any thouts or ideas? Hardware suggestions? Also is there any charts on what I need to bring in to support that many users.

Thanks,
Brian

Wow I can't type. Star Topolgy.

Are you controlling the content on the internet connection? or are you just concerned with 1 user hogging all the bandwidth with his/her porn?

For Filtering:
A IPrism with St.Bernard is a great internet filter, works for all IM's and web content.

For Bandwidth Shaping:
I would do Connection Tracking and a Linux box for your gateway. That way you can say, each user (by IP/Mac) gets 100KB Down, and 20KB Up, MAX.

I would put switches on each floor (10/100 with Fibre uplink), uplink each floor to a center point in the basement, or main floor via fibre 1GB. Do some basic access lists on each switch to prevent users from seeing each other. (Port seperation).

Link the buildings together to 1 center building using Fibre 1gb. (you could go overkill with 10gb, but whats the point). Then from the distribution switch in that building link it to the iPrism to filter content, then to the Linux Gateway to do the Shaping.

You can do CAR with policy maps (basically QoS) on Cisco equipment.

Not really worried about content. Mainly just an internet hogger.

Any other ideas on limiting bandwidth? I'm trying to make it all appliance base without any servers on site.

Is there an appliance to give out dhcp and do traffic limiting?
Thanks,
Brian
