This is major problem with AOL and the solution I have found just today (having wasted best part of a day's work trying to resolve this issue!!!).
It may help you! Please pass this onto your other AOL friends,
A few days ago I noticed problems with CPU resource demand going up and the system freezing. Had to manually switch off to reboot.
Eventually I found that when logged onto AOL the WAOL.EXE programme was demanding 60 - 70% plus of the CPU resource.
The way you find out is to do the following:-
§ Log onto AOL with no other programmes open
§ Click the right mouse button on the ‘task bar’
§ A pop-up menu should appear
§ Select ‘Task Manager’
§ Select the ‘Processes’ tab
§ Look at the bottom of this dialogue box – the CPU % should be 0 - 4%
§ If it is higher scroll down the processes list and look for WAOL.EXE
§ The CPU figure for WAOL.EXE should be 0 – 2%
§ If it is high (say 30 -70%) then you have this problem and mys solution is described here.
Numerous calls to AOL tech help: first to use the quick recovery tool, then to totally uninstall. Nothing solved the problem.
Then finally I got a techie who said they think it is a system fault at AOL’s end.
He told me to do the following:-
§ Go to keyword “popups”
§ Go to the animation tab
§ Click the ‘Animated Media’ tab
§ Click the ‘Block animated media from these sites’
§ Reboot
This did not work!
What he had failed to tell me was to add ‘AOL.COM’ and ‘AOL.CO.UK’ to the site box, which may seem obvious!
Having now done this on 3 different machines WAOL.EXE demand has gone down from 60-70% to 0% when logged on!!!
Should explained that the system fault is with the flash animation on the AOL Welcome Screen - this is what is calling on 70% of the CPU!!
I contacted AOL to tell them this but the techie just kept going back over the original steps.
Was finally able to make him understand and suggested AOL email all users. Don’t hold your breath!!
