DVD sound stutter - PCI Latency settings
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

W98SE
BIOS Version/Date Award Software, Inc. ASUS CUV4X ACPI BIOS Revision 1009, 24/04/2001
ram : 896 mb ram
cpu : p3 997 mhz
hdd : hitachi deckstar 80 gb Model HDS722580VLAT20
sound : VIA AC'97 Audio Controller (WDM)
driver: Vinyl AC’97 Audio (Wave) … doesn’t sound right??? Know a better driver please??
video : NVidia Riva 128/128ZX

Sound breaks up badly with dvd - and understand finding the right pci latency settings should do the trick ... Also believe Via can be problematic and maybe a patch is available??

Current settings from PCI Latency Tool 2.0:

pcilatency.jpg

Please note:

- VGA compatible controller shared with broadband
- Firewire not in use

Have tried:

a) VGA compatible controller 64 + everything else 0
b) VGA compatible controller 64 and increasing USB 2.0 in units of 8

Makes no difference. Would welcome advice on settings to try + your thoughts on any other possible causes? ... Bios settings etc??

[Main problem ... don't know what I'm doing ... guesswork ... help on how to calculate pci latencies would be brilliant!]

Many thanks,

Has this setup ever played DVDs correctly? The Riva128 is an old thing, and I'm not sure that it has any acceptable video acceleration features. This makes the CPU doing all the work and there may be no more bandwidth for the sound.

Felixc - thanks that's helpful.

Here is the history:

a) Always worked fine on higher spec models (p4 etc).
b) Problem first occured when tried to run DVD on similar spec socket 370 (below).
c) Current 370 used as test machine purely to try and find out why not possible to run on b)

Result now getting identical symptoms on second socket 370 (machine detailed with specs detailed at beginning of thread).

b) Here are details of original socket 370 with similar specs - you will see this has an ATI RADEON VE DDR and wonder if this might be worth swapping for the Riva 128 - or whether this too was equally likely to have been the source of the problem?? :

Windows XP Professional
BIOS Version/Date
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 6.27.10 12/18/2001
Mobo: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. 6VX7-4X / 6VX7B-4X 1.0
ram : 512 mb ram
cpu : 500 megahertz Intel Celeron
hdd : ST380021A [Hard drive] (80.03 GB)
sound : Santa Cruz(tm) WDM Interface (WDM)
video : ATI RADEON VE DDR [Display adapter]

Thanks again,

Not being rude but i think your asking a lot of the system u only have a 500mhz processor and to start off with u have it running xp pro and u expect it to run dvds.
to be honest i think 500mhz is too slow to really run dvd well i had a compaq 7464 back in 1999 that was a 500mhz amd k6 it had a dvd drive with dvd play back software but it never played dvds that well i always got clipping and stuttering.
This still happened when i had the ram maxed out like you i had 512mb the maximum the mb would take.
I might be wrong with my diagnosis but i just thought id try and help.

Foxconn - Thanks that is really helpful to know. Between the two machines I shall see if the combination P3 1000Mhz / Ati Radeon VE DDR / W98SE gives just the extra bit needed??.

Unfortunately am having problems setting up Radeon VE adaptor type. Resolution is limited 640 x 480 16 bit and to dual monitor.

Cannot seem to find a way of setting for single monitor and 800 x 600 32bit. Drivers appear to be properly installed and all tests passed (memory fill; memory aperture; linear aperture; generic display; palette read/write).

There may be some way of configuring the BIOS but I cannot find it (Asus CUV 4X)? Any help would be most welcome. Many thanks.
