Any way to calm the Windows update client?

Is there way to calm down the WU client it seems to murder XP boxes when it's scanning. Earlier on i was using an XP laptop 2.4 Ghz AMD with 512 Mb RAM and i noticed it become very slow on inspection i could see the WUAUCLT process was running and SVchost running at 99% CPU. This seems to happen on most of our boxes and our users complain when their PC starts grinding as WSUS punts out the patches.

Any ideas?

My fix:

[li]Temporarily stop the automatic updates service. (you should see CPU drop)[/li]
[li]Download

[li]Run WindowsUpdateAgent20-x86.exe /wuforce[/li]
[li]Rename C:\windows\software distribution to C:\windows\software distribution.old[/li]
[li]Rename C:\windows\windowsupdate.log to c:\windows\windowsupdate.log.old[/li]
[li]restart the automatic updates service.[/li]

I see now why the issue seems to of got much worse since moving to Office 2003 so we can patch with WSUS, it all seemed ok before then but since then some clients grind for extended periods.

Not that I know of.
Call them and tell them you need the Hotfix for KB916089

There will be no charge. They will email you download instructions.
