i have a win2000 client which randomly prompts an error msg "SMART has detected a problem with a hard disk drive.. which appears to indicate a bad sector on its hard drive"

is there a utility to check this like scandisk/chkdsk etc or may be even a 3rd party shareware?

chkdsk /R C:

Should check the hard drive for errors, and recover data from any bad sectors. Note, it may take a while to go through the entire process.

try running chkdsk with the /r and /v parameters.
/r: locates bad sectos and recovers any readable information (implies /f, which automatically fixes errors on the disk)

/v: displays any cleanup messages, if any.

c:\>chkdsk /r/v <drive_letter>:

hope this helps
