I have a client who has an existing peer-to-peer network consisting of 4 systems, each with NAV 2002. He purchased a used server running NT 4.0.Server. with no virus protection. He really doesn't want to purchase NAV Corporate Edition with 5 licenses, since he already has protection on the workstations. Will NAV 2002 (or 2003) run independently on NT 4.0 Server? Or is it possible to purchase a stand-alone version of the Corporate Edition without the additional licenses? Or is there any other brand that will accomplish this?

Thanks,
Barry

Go to F-Secure

Download an evaluation 30 days of F-Secure for Windows Server..

Needs virus definitions update with Fsupdate after installation and reboot
from:
Plus the patch number 3 which will add protective capabilities for KLEZ and such worms from:ftp://ftp.f-secure.com/support/hotfix/fsav/fsas540-03.fsfix

You are ok...then
If you find suitable buy it....

Barry:

In answer to your question, YES NAV will do it. Is this what you have?
Norton AntiVirus 2002 for Windows 2000/NT/Me/98/XP

If so, check out the manual...it should answer any other questions you may have.

F-Secure is a great product, also expensive.

Kimber,

Thanks for the reply. I looked at the manual and it says nothing about NT Server, so I assume it's not compatible. I tried installing it and it would not install.

Hmmm...then I have been badly misinformed.

Last time I had an issue like this one I called them...saved me hours digging for documentation.

Is that an option? Members of Tek-Tips provide answers to questions based on the information given. For the best answers, post detailed descriptions of the issue. Use the search features of the site to see if your issue was already addressed in another thread.

I contacted my person at Symantec. Will let you know by Monday.

Thanks, Kimber. I've not had a chance to call them. I appreciate your follow-up.

My person e-mailed me some info today per request last week.

This is an excerpt, and you were right, the version you have will do NT , but NOT servers.

" At this time, the only solution we offer for Servers is our Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition. Symantec AntiVirus Small Business Edition provides the same award winning protection as Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition,
however; it's sold in 5, 10, 25 or 50-user license packs.

Symantec AntiVirus Small Business Edition for Workstations and Network Servers (SAV SBE) is the recommended antivirus solution for your environment. SAV SBE
provides protection for Windows NT, Windows 2000 and NetWare servers as well Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows XP, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 3.1, DOS and Macintosh workstations. This product also includes a centralized management tool, Symantec System Center (SSC). SSC is an administrative tool compatible with Windows NT/2000 servers or workstations that pushes virus definition updates out to the clients automatically and allows you to centrally manage tasks such as scanning and
network policies.

The purchase of SAV SBE also includes Gold Maintenance. Gold Maintenance covers virus definitions, program updates, program upgrades, and Technical Support. Technical Support includes two contacts from your organization who will be able to call technical support on any issues with the product. The terms of the Technical Support contract may vary, depending on how many users you purchase."

Has been a learning curve for me as well...hope this helps you out and has saved you some time and effort.
