I have a computer that has 2000 server on it but it's being used as a ordinary machine. Norton and Mcafee give me messages that say they won't run on server. Anyone know of a good Antivirus that doesn't care about what it's installed on? Once again, this machine isn't being used to server any network of machines.

Hello

MY experience with antivirus for win2k server is as follows. I have tried Normal antivirus, and that crashed active directory. Now I have a virus wall running in a dmz ( safe) , trend micro on the exchange server itself and I have purchased Norten antivirus corporate edition for networks. This is installed on a win2k server and it manages all my workstations across 2 domains and 6 subnets. It is really a great tol for simplified management. All clients updates etc are controlled from 2 central servers on my lan. This version of Norton did not complain about any servers.

Sophos.
it is easy to install and can update all workstations remotely. Doesn't hose up or crash workstations or intefere with apps as symantec.

also norton and macafee both need server versions to run.

with sophos you buy (great price) a server license and you get 10 client licenses.

Trend Office Scan.
1) Protects the servers from virus'.
2) Allows you to schedule when and how often it will automatically contact trend's website and download the latest Pattern Version. (We do it at midnight everynight.)
3) When you add a user via there application, it puts a batch file in the profile of active directory so then the user logs on the first time, trend finds out if they have anything else installed like norton, uninstalls it with NO user intervention, then installs itself.
4) If the server has found a new pattern version, when the user logs on, he gets the latest, so the user never has to do a live update.
It's not perfect, I'm having an issue that I'm working with tech support with, but it is good. Glen A. Johnson

I didn't know that AV could crash AD like that, and taking this into account, this fix may or may not be the right choice for you, snooze...NAV is my personal fave in the area of AV software, and if you use version 2001 instead of 2002 it will run OK on a server without telling you to purchase the server product. I actually have a server running this now(2k, w/AD) and it hasn't hiccuped yet.
The only other concern which I yet again haven't had a problem with is an outdated scan engine vs. 2002. Not sure about that tho.
