What is the best way to fight spam. I am getting clobbered by spam emails. I get at least one or two a day. Right now I am using a product called Open Relay Filter.

One or two a day . . . that's pretty lucky.

You can get packages to do it. I use something called policypatrol ( which needs a little configuring, but works really well.

We get several hundred a day, but maybe 3 or 4 get through.

You can choose how to deal with spam, for example mine is set to just bounce anything with certain words - Viagra etc, and to hold mails with doubtful properties, such as .gif attachments (the spammers new favourite). So every now and then I have to check what is being held, and let through bona fide mails, and bonce spam.

It's not particularly time consuming, but I don't think there is any reliable way to stop all spam without a little human intervention now and then.

are you setting the mails to be held in Exchange or in the anti spam software? If it is in exchange how are you doing that? Thank you very much for the help. The painfull thing is that it is the CEO that gets the most spam that comes through.... sigh

No, we have the filter between the firewall, and the exchange server. I actually use 3 separate servers for it, but I guess you could put it all on two - if I remember correctly the filter can't be on the same server as exchange.

The Exchange server never sees the spam.

I have to say though, one or two per day is really very little, annoying though it is. What kind of spam is it? Can you describe it - for such a small amount of spam there might be a way to get Outlook to zap it with an inbox rule.

We get 3 - 400 / day, with just 30 users. :(

I have my present filter on the smtp server which is in front of the two exchange servers, one with the public key and the other with the private key. So majority of the spam emails never get to the exchange server. How can I set mails to be held for my inspection on the primary exchange server?
Ikpa

Surfcontrol mail filter will do what you ask for. The spams will sit and wait for you to inspect.

I get 4,000 a day with 300 mailbox. I guess we average out the same spammers. lol Wish they start passing some laws.

The problem is that you seem to already be filtering out most of the spam, so I guess the question needs redefining - how can you stop the last few getting through? Please correct me if that's wrong.

I'm not sure you can, without disrupting normal mail. If you're prepared to do that - to stop ALL mail coming through, then most of these packages will do it, I'm assuming then that you don't have so much mail. I get about 1000 per day, and could never inspect them all individually.

That can be an indication of what he uses his computer for.
