I am having trouble getting a mouse to work on a Gateway, 75 MHZ PC with Win98. There is no USB. I have tried two different mice and have even switched the plugs b/w the keyboard and the mice. When the PC is booting and in the DOS like screen (black and white) I see the message telling me that both a keyboard and mouse have been detected. But when the boot advances to right before the Windows desktop, I get a dialog box telling me that “Windows did not detect a mouse attached to the computer…..” I am currently using MouseKeys to move around.
I found (somewhere) under Mouse Port that there were “No conflicts”
As to drivers, I found the MSMouse.vxd driver (version 4.10.1998) in the C:\Windows.000\System folder.
I found the Mouse.drv driver (version 9.01.0.000) in the C:\Windows.000\System, the C:\WINNT\System and C:\WINNT\System32 folders.
I went into the System Information area and came up with the following information. I may be giving more than needed, but I don’t know what to do at this time.
Under Hardware Resources/Conflicts I have:
IRQ 4 Communications Port (COM1)
IRQ 4 Communications Port (COM3)
IRQ 14 Primary IDE controller (single fifo)
IRQ 14 PC Tech PCI IDE Single or Dual Port Controller
There is no forced hardware.
Under I/O there is no mouse info listed.
Under IRQ's I have:
IRQ's
0 System timer
1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural Keyboard
2 Programmable interrupt controller
3 Communications Port (COM2)
4 Communications Port (COM1)
4 Communications Port (COM3)
5 (free)
6 Standard Floppy Disk Controller
7 Printer Port (LPT1)
8 System CMOS/real time clock
9 IRQ Holder for PCI Steering
10 (free)
11 (free)
12 PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port
13 Numeric data processor
14 Primary IDE controller (single fifo)
14 PC Tech PCI IDE Single or Dual Port Controller
15 Standard IDE/ESDI Hard Disk Controller
Under Components/Ports I have:
"There are no port devices."
Under Components/Problem Devices I have:
"There are no devices with problems on this machine."
Under Components/System I have:
"There are no system devices."
Under Software Environment/Drivers/Kernel there is the "VMOUSE" driver.
Under Software Environment/Drivers/16Bit there is the "mouse" driver.
Under Software Environment/Drivers/32Bit there is no mouse info.
Does anyone know what the problem is and how I can go about fixing it?
TIA,
Bill
