Since I have installed Windows XP Pro, I have a Pop-up each time I boot up. "Can't run 16-Bit Windows Program" "Insuficiant memory to run this application. Quit one or more Windows applications and then try again." I have un-installed my previous Windows ME from my system, and looked into startup, but still can not get rid of this annoying Pop-up. Looking for any help. Thank You for any help. Skihouse

Maybe its a program rather than windows
Start | Run | Msconfig and kill any processes you dont want at startup.
See if this happens in safe mode
Diskdefrag/ScanDisk to make sure the system is in order

Use Spybot Search and Destroy, Adaware 6 to clean your pc of any possible problems

Re.I looked at Msconfig, didn't see anything that would be associated with 16 Bit. I ran diskdefrag, and disk cleanup. Still have the problem. Thanks for the info. I'll keep searching the registry. Skihouse

I believe that following faq608-4650 will sort this issue.

For 16 Bit error messages check out the link. If you are running Windows XP, NT 4.0, or 2000, and critical files needed to enable Microsoft® Windows® Virtual DOS Machine (NTVDM) 16-bit subsystem are missing or corrupt, your system will not be able to run 16-bit utilities, which may result in these errors.

The deal is that the user gets this at Startup.

This is malware in one way or another, not an issue with Wowexec or the rest of the 16-bit DVM for XP.

skihouse should not see this message at boot. This is not standard behavior by the XP client. It is malware.

We who are slow in submitting answers to questions can only add comments around the edges of questions after the most probable cause has been covered adequately by previous posters. And when the poster requests "any help" that is all we are trying to do, but also to assist the next person who has "Can't run 16-Bit Windows Program" problems who may happen upon this thread.

My reading of this is that it is an upgrade from ME, so anything is possible, including a few missing known dll's.

Forum member linney makes an excellent point: upgrades to XP from Windows ME is rough, and usually a bad idea.

A clean install of XP is strongly recommended in this particular case.

What still bothers me is that the original poster issue is a Startup error.

There is no native, or standard call to the Wowexec feature of XP at startup.

Something, my guess malware, is occasioning this call at startup. faq608-4650 is at least one place to start to resolve the issue.

Just my two cents but it sounds like a program trying to load from the win.ini load= section or something like that. Probably is malware. Try running msconfig and taking a look see of what is actually trying to load at start. If there is something there, disable it.

I went to FAQ608-4650 and downloaded an ran, cwshredder, Spybot, AdAware, Winsock repair. Still cannot remove pop-up after re-booting. Looked at files in start up (win.ini) etc. but I can't identify anything that appears or looks like 16-bit problem. I use Norton as my anti-virus, and also scanned using AVG virus, which did not find anything. Do you think this is a left over from Windows Me?

This has to be a startup item. Have you tried a process of elimination. Using the msconfig tool disable all the startup items. Then reboot. See if you still get the error. If not then readd them one at a time until you do and note which annoying program caused the error and remove that. This is very tedious because it will require rebooting many times. If at anytime you cannot boot because you removed something from startup press F8 during the bootup and choose Safe Mode.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this message in Safe Mode?).

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy. This will check if any of the "known Dll's" as per Q222975
are missing or if there is any other system corruption.

Or better still, a clean install and format as suggested by

Hi, I tried booting up in the safe mode, the pop-up does not appear. I'm going to do the slow process of msconfig, and start up, taking one item at a time. Thanks everyone for all your help, I think by working on this slow process of elimination, I should be able to locate the problem.

Let us know how you get on as this will help the next person with a similar problem.

Final! I went to msconfig and started to eliminate items in Start-up one at a time, then re-booting each time until I able to find the culprit. It was a file "c:\cacard\fmremin", it was in the Startup Item "Forget Me Not". I went to search and deleted the file, then went to Windows Explorer and deleted the entire file "CACARD", this was a file that was left over from Windows ME after I up-graded to XP. I checked the registry for more files, and also to eliminate the reference to the file in Start-up. Did not find anything in registry, the reference to the file still appears in Start-Up but since all files on the problem have been deleated so has the Pop-up!!!

I want to Thank all that helped out on this problem.
