Annoying icon problem.

On my Dell Inspiron 1000 laptop I have a really annoying problem. When I open windows explorer and go to a folder full of jpeg files, it brings my pc to a standstill. This is because it is lowly turning the icon of each file from the icon associated with no file type, to the photoshop icon. Starting at the top and then one after the other, each files icon gets changed to what its program association should be. This takes forwever and really slows the pc down and I cant do anything whilst its doing it. Its also very slow when I have the folder set to thumbnail view. Is there any way I can stop the icons from appearing or speed up the process?

Set the view to details. Then go to tools, folder options, and the view tab and select aplly to all folders. That will do away with the icons everytime you open a folder.

Its already on details view Im afraid. They are very small icons, but still take an age to come up.

Might try going to "tools"--> "folder options" then under General and View check the reset defaults. close down explorer...back to open the desktop --> in a blank space right click "REFRESH..."

Nope I thought that worked but it didn't.

Here is a quick screen shot to show what I mean. This is about 10 seconds into opening explorer. The icons are being built from the top down.

Hi,
I believe that as long as a program is associated with a file, it will display the icon for that program..I have not seen any place to change that behavior.

OK, might be. then I'd try this.... go back to "my computer" open --> tools --> folder options --> file types and remove what ever you have for jpeg, jpg & jpe set back to default (restore). I use Windows Picture & fax viewer... PS: MS loves it when you use the DEFAULT settings.

just to make sure you are not barking up the wrong tree, have you checked task manager to see if it is indeed explorer.exe that is using up all the resources? Might be something else. Do you have the same issue with any directory, or only one with lots of jpegs? The system should not use more resources loading one icon over another unless it is HUGE.
