Annoying baloons 1

When I startup XP I get these annoying little balloons on the taskbar reminding me of various things like unused shortcuts on my desktop, that I need to apply for a passport account, something isn't configured, etc.

Where do I turn off these stupid little balloons?

Edit Registry Settings

User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ExplorerAdvanced]
Value Name: EnableBalloonTips
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

1. Start regedit.exe.
2. Go to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
3. Create a new DWORD value called EnableBalloonTips.
4. Give it a decimal value of 0 (zero)
5. Click OK.
6. Close regedit.

The most simple way:
Open My Computer. Go to Tools then choose Folder Options,
click view tab, scroll down to the bottom and uncheck "Show pop-up description

These steps disable all Notification Area balloon tips for a user. There is no way to disable balloon tips for specific programs only.

You should see the Windows Update icon in the Notification area however, unless you have it set to "Always Hide".

Another way is to install "Tweak UI Powertoysw" for Windows XP. Under the taskbar tree is an option to disable the balloon tips.

Try this:
Right click Start button - Properties - Start Menu - Customize - Advanced - Uncheck 'Help and Support'
(This will eliminate baloons from the Start Menu. The 'My Computer...' procedure mentioned before by coakerb will eliminate square pop-up descriptions)
