Is it possible to dial an IP phone (remote site on WAN) where an analog modem is actually the device that will answer in order to receive and transmit data? It seems if this is possible there would have to be a converter device of some kind. Any ideas are appreciated.
yes, ip-to-analog converters do exist but unfortunately they do not support modem-over-ip. the problem with connecting modems over ip is that there's no approved standard for this protocol and every vendor implement it differently. however, avaya media gateways do support some kind of modem-over-ip but it's limited to working only between avaya media gateways and the modem connection speed will be no more than 9600 bps. if you still want to use it, you'll need some small media gateway such as g250 on the remote side, where modem resides.
