My CPU fan started making a noise yesterday and my system froze up. When I hit the reset button the system shut down. Now when I try and boot the system it will begin to start up and then die and shut back down. I've checked all the power chords and replaced the CPU fan itself and it is still doing it.

Any recomendations?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but it sounds as if the chip might have been fried. The fan making a noise suggesting it's worn out, then the thing freezing (probabaly due to excessive heat). Sorry if that is that case, never a nice thing to happen.

You could try swapping the CPU over with a similar one (you might be able to borrow off a friend). IF the system works then it's the CPU, if still no, then something else has given up. My money's on the CPU though I'm afraid :-(. Sorry!

I'v had several Abit mobos fail recently, with the CPU, memory etc., being perfectly ok.

Good luck.

HI
CAUTION CAUTION !!!.

One thing I notice with AMD CPUs... they are very very snsitive to heat compared to Intel. If the CPU is on without CPU-FAN working, 99% sure.. it fails. That has been my experience.

Also, the Fan heat sink is little tricky to remove. The CPU has a small projection in the moddle, which if pressed at an angle easily chips off. The better the fan... the tighter they sit with CPU.. the tighter they sit, the better chance to damage that when removal time. But if you know how to remove using a broad flat screwdriver as a wedge on the catch of the fan (dont use that between CPU and Fan), it is just a seconds job :) If you had used little force medling.. likely, you could have damaged the CPU.

Now you have to judge what is the cause ! :-( :)

Yes ... all good advice. AMD chips burn incredibly hot that is why they are so fast and the fan must be perfectly seated in order to not jeopardise the chip's well-being. I built up 5x 1.2ghz Athlon systems in the last month and found that the "Coolermaster" fans sit on the chip very nicely indeed. Like the guy says above, fan qualities do vary .. .and I can recommend this particular one as the best I have seen. This won't fix your problem but maybe a good thought for the future.

Best Regards ... and good luck!
